Google Gives New York City Libraries $1 Million for Program to Help Close the Digital Divide
Library HotSpot provides students enrolled in NYPL educational programs and their families with the opportunity to borrow free Wi-Fi devices from their local libraries. The program was successfully tested by NYPL over the summer. Thanks to the Google gift, along with a $500,000 grant from the Knight News Challenge, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and $250,000 grants from Open Society Foundations and Robin Hood Foundation, Library HotSpot can now be extended to all three New York City library systems, including Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library, as well as nationally to libraries in Maine and Kansas!
