Lombard Freid Gallery is pleased to announce a one-night benefit exhibition on Monday, September 10, from 6-10 PM, for the Russian feminist art collective Pussy Riot. Tickets are $50 per person, and all proceeds will go to assisting the families and defense fund of the collective.
Nadejda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich, Pussy Riot’s three members, have been unjustly sentenced to two years in prison for a 30-second anti-Putin performance in Moscow’s main cathedral. Pussy Riot Videos 2011- 2012 provides a platform for important voices to be heard from the contemporary arts community to advocate for the women’s release. The one-night exhibition features five original guerilla punk video performances of Pussy Riot shot in various sites throughout Moscow from 2011-2012. A program of invited musicians, artists, writers, theorists will be reading statements throughout the evening.
The Pussy Riot videos provide a deeper context and understanding of the political actions of the feminist collective whose lyrics include deep social commentary on the current political and religious leadership, growing abuses of human rights including the increasingly harsh government imprisonment of many ordinary citizens caught in demonstrations against government policies.
Let your voice be heard on Monday, September 10, 2012.
