Councilmember Mark Treyger Makes the Grade Again, Earns UFT’s Endorsement
Teachers also endorsed the Democrat in 2013 – will work hard to re-elect him – citing his understanding of our schools as a former teacher
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – City Councilmember Mark Treyger, seeking re-election to represent the 47th District, received the endorsement of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), adding a major ally to Treyger’s coalition of supporters. The UFT represents New York City teachers, education professionals, and support staff, touting 200,000 members and 60,000 retirees.
“As a former teacher at New Utrecht High School, Mark Treyger has an understanding of the issues facing our schools and has demonstrated his commitment to bettering our schools and their infrastructure. Mark is a leader and has a record that shows he can get things done,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew.
“I am so honored to have the UFT’s support and as a former member and educator, I know the important work the UFT does for the community. During my first term, we were able to bring about positive changes to our schools through increasing funding and addressing overcrowding and infrastructure concerns by adding seats to P.S. 101 and P.S. 97 and removing temporary boilers. I am proud to stand with our teachers and students and will continue to advocate for them at the City Council,” said Treyger.
The UFT is New York City’s primary union for teachers, paraprofessionals, school secretaries, and other professional staff in the city’s public school system. The UFT Political Action Department, the political arm of the organization, focuses on building relationships in the community and promoting candidates and policies that support public education.
Treyger has made education one of the cornerstones of his time in the City Council. Earlier this year, he secured $20 million in funding for the Teacher’s Choice program, which reimburses teachers for out-of-pocket spending on classroom supplies. Treyger also secured funds for improvements to school libraries, auditoriums, and gymnasiums across the district. Additionally, he was a major advocate for bringing air conditioning to every classroom in the city.
The endorsement from the UFT comes on the heels of last week’s endorsement from 100 community leaders and advocates across Southern Brooklyn. Treyger is seeking a second term to be the 47th District’s City Councilmember. The 47th District includes Coney Island, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, and Sea Gate. The General Election is on November 7, 2017.
