I also resigned from the position of Democratic District Leader in the 45th Assembly District Leader. I could not agree with elimination of Gifted and Talented programs in schools, attempts to abolish entrance SHSAT exams to specialized High Schools, fiasco with ThriveNYC program that spent more than $800 mln. of taxpayers money, but did not do anything to resolve growing mental health crisis.\nBut even more important - Democratic Party showed again and again that it did not care about our public safety. Bail reform and defunding NYPD, bashing of police officers and other law enforcement (like calling them \"white supremacists\"), releasing violent criminals and ignoring hate crimes against Jews, Asian Americans and others made me rethink my allegiance to the Democratic Party. As Councilman, I publicly and privately expressed my support for law enforcement. But I clearly saw a disdain for the rule of law and ignorance of the plight of crime victims. I recently expressed my strong oppostion to the proposed bill to ban criminal background checks of prospective tenants. But that bill is already supported by 31 Council members, including Democratic Majority Leader.\nI was elected to represent more than 175,000 residents of the diverse and compact 47th Council District, but this year NYC Districting Commission (12 Democratic appointees and only 3 Republican) cut my district in 5 pieces, completely ignoring hundreds of letters from many community leaders and organizations.\nI could no longer be in the Democratic Party that ignored basic concerns of Southern Brooklyn communities, especially public safety and basic quality of life issues. Even before I publicly announced my decision, my detractors started to attack my character, my community work and my commitment to constituents. I overcame many adversities in my life and these attacks do not bother me. They just proved one more time that I made a right decision and feel comfortable about it. \nI will continue to serve people of Southern Brooklyn and New York City to the best of my abilities as I pledged on Torah.
